the last few years have seen chicago footwork rise to international success, and traxmans debut album - *the mind of traxman* on planet mu - played no small part in that. it showcased cornelius fergusons brilliant ability to synthesise the beat digging of classic hip hop with the high-speed abstraction of footworks house-derived beat science. the selection of tracks on this second chapter show a slightly different take on traxman s abilities. instead of bringing in concepts from other genres, he simply creates a wider variety of footwork, made with a minimal, reduced palette. often just one or two samples are selected and diced into brain-blurring cubist puzzles that bear little relation to their original sources, or anything else for that matter.

without a doubt, manfredi romano (aka dj tennis) is a busy man. co-founder and partner of life and death, a dj with a full schedule and someone who still always has his fingers (and mind) in multiple projects and multiple places at the same time. how he juggles it (or when he sleeps) are questions best not pondered. one thing those who know him well have surely noticed is that he does it all while constantly on the move. unfazed by the constant whirl of cities that pass him by, he somehow manages to remain focused throughout. no matter where he goes, he somehow always manages to remain local.

monaco a go-go is singer/songwriter jobst miksche from hamburg/germany and persimmon lane ep is his debut release (for couldnt care more). with dance around yourself and machines it offers two slow intimate folk songs full of beauty and melancholia but also a certain easiness. on the b-side aera (who runs the aleph label) translates .dance around yourself. into an exotica infused cumbia acid mix that makes you feel quite the same than dj kozes adventures on. amygdala. do: dizzy, weird and sublime.

rising label releases its second ep with an original track by victor martinez, another artist from the agency, that gives life to this record and gets completed by remixes from oscar mulero, ness and adriana lopez. the original track by victor, -anything called dead consumerism”, is all about visceral and obscure techno with broken rhythms and high levels of hypnotism. following, we can find oscar mulero’s remix, a version that suggests another groove but maintains the essence of the original making it a serious and effective weapon. on the b side we can find ness’ remix, a track that captures you since the beginning. deep, elastic and elegant at the same time where hypnotism reigns and this few characteristics of the italian producer. adriana lopez closes the ep with a more percussive and energetic version. fine techno that catches you from the first beat, a perfect track as a dj.

british label innercity records made a flying start to life last year, with their v/a releases going down a treat with a slew of the scenes prime movers and shakers. for their latest release, the manchester based label does much the same again, as they compound their auspicious start to life courtesy of a four-tracker thats dripping in refined house-music textures.

this time around is the long awaited follow-up to the succesful probe album by roswell return. the original is a mesmerizing piece of minimal electronic music, heavily inspired by composer steve reich. more than 10 minutes of pure synth bliss. on the b-side syncom data take it into deep techno territory with a shuffling and ridiculously low-end remix thats both warm and unsettling at the same time. deep basslines keep pushing everything forward, while the constantly rising church-like organ brings a nervous mayhem quality to it.

stompin at the savoy – live (1983) was a major commercial success for rufus and chaka khan, reaching #4 on billboards r&b albums charts. this double-record set features three sides of live material recorded over multiple dates at the savoy theatre in new york. the band stunned packed audiences with an energetic set of old favorites and new material, such as *tell me something good*, *you got the love*, *sweet thing*, *at midnight (my love will lift you up)*, and *do you love what you feel* as well as *what cha gonna do for me* from khans 1981 solo album of the same name. the d-side includes four new studio recordings of which two were released as singles, *aint nobody* and *one million kisses*. *aint nobody* became rufus final #1 r&b hit and won them a grammy award for best r&b performance by a duo or group with vocal in 1984. the song was featured in the movie breakin and its soundtrack.
